Dan Gorman ’27
This summer, I had the opportunity to join Kemp Gouldin Σ ’02 in expanding the mission of his nonprofit, Because Baseball, at the fourth annual MLB Play Ball Weekend in Cairo, Egypt. In the months leading up to the event, I served as director of communications, where I managed social media, interviewed former MLB and MiLB players, and wrote newsletters. All of this work came together in an unforgettable weekend, where Kemp, the ambassador coaches, and I shared the joy of baseball with more than 300 kids from across Cairo, including Special Olympics athletes, local orphanages, and future stars of the game. The energy and excitement we experienced were unlike anything I have ever felt (until next year, at least!). That weekend reaffirmed for me that sports are far more than exercise or entertainment; they are a powerful way to build community and spread joy in an increasingly divided world.
