This summer, I had the opportunity to intern with Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO), a nonprofit affordable housing developer in Asheville, North Carolina. MHO’s mission is to build and preserve safe, affordable homes and strengthen neighborhoods so that everyone, regardless of income, has a place to live. As part of the multifamily rentals team, I contributed to various stages of the development process — from site selection and design to financing, closing, and construction. Asheville faces unique challenges, including some of the highest rents in North Carolina, a large low-income population, and recent housing displacement due to Hurricane Helene. Knowing that my work helped advance projects that will provide stable, affordable housing made this experience deeply rewarding and impactful.
