This summer, I am incredibly excited to be conducting a research project titled “Miracles on Ice? Legacy, Sustainability, and the Future of the Winter Olympics,” of course made possible with the generous support of the Alpha Sigma Foundation and the Morehead-Cain Scholarship. I am currently travelling across former and future European host regions, including Turin, Milan, Cortina, Lillehammer, and the French Alps, and I’m working alongside local faculty members and officials to explore what the Winter Games really means for its host region. Alongside this, I am training for the Midnight Sun Marathon in Tromsø under the 24-hour Arctic summer sun on the summer solstice in June. Having been struck by the remarkable scale of the Olympic movement ever since taking Dr. Matt Andrews’ Global History of the Olympic Games course at UNC, this opportunity really is a fantastic avenue to explore this passion of mine. I’m hugely grateful to the foundation for their support as I journey across some of Europe’s most scenic lands.
