Bert Johnson ’82 Honored on November 14

Bert Johnson ’82 is being honored this fall for his exemplary service to Alpha Sigma of Chi Psi as well as to Chi Psi Fraternity at the national level.

Bert Johnson was a devoted and engaged member of the Lodge as an undergraduate. An English and American Studies major, he served on Alpha Sigma’s Executive Committee and earned induction into three of UNC’s most distinguished campus societies: the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Order of the Grail, and the Order of the Old Well. He went on to earn a law degree from the University of Virginia.

His commitment to Alpha Sigma continued long after graduation. From 2010 to 2017, he served on the Alpha Sigma Foundation, including as chair. During his tenure, he helped strengthen the Foundation’s financial resources and expand the Alpha Sigma’s Summer Enrichment Scholarships, providing undergraduates with opportunities to travel internationally each summer for educational and service experiences.

During this time, Bert also began his service to Chi Psi Fraternity at the national level as a member of the Executive Council. Traveling to meetings and the convention four times per year, Bert contributed to the oversight of the governing affairs of the Fraternity across the United States.

Bert also served as president of the Alpha Sigma Corporation from 2017 to 2026, leading through a particularly challenging period for the Alpha. His leadership addressed a wide range of pressing organizational and operational issues. He brought order to the Corporation’s financial records, restored its good standing with government agencies, and took important steps toward rebuilding strained relationships with the Alpha. He also strengthened ties with Lodge neighbors, improved food services, enhanced the property, and successfully challenged a property tax assessment that would have nearly doubled the Alpha’s tax burden.

Brother Johnson serves as a vital link among generations of Alpha Sigma alumni. A gifted relationship-builder, he has a remarkable ability to keep Brothers connected and engaged. His Chapel Hill home is a welcoming gathering place for Chi Psis and their families, whom he frequently hosts. His generosity, hospitality, and genuine concern for his Brothers exemplify the spirit of Chi Psi. His devotion to the Fraternity is evident not only in his years of service but also in the personal relationships he has nurtured and sustained.

In recognition of his exceptional loyalty, steadfast service, and enduring dedication to Chi Psi Fraternity at the national level, the grateful Brotherhood awarded Bert the Distinguished Service Award in 2021. In recognition of his devotion, commitment, contribution to Alpha Sigma, the alumni and undergraduates celebrated his service in November.

We are all grateful for his passion and persistence in making the Lodge an even better place than he found it!
