The Bert Johnson Access to Excellence Scholarship for undergraduate education was established to expand educational opportunities in a meaningful way, reduce financial hardship, and recognize leadership. This scholarship is available to an active, initiated undergraduate member of Alpha Sigma of Chi Psi.
In considering scholarship recipients, particular value should be placed on brothers who demonstrate one or more of the following qualities:
Brotherhood: A commitment to friendship, mutual respect, inclusion, service, and the well-being and success of others.
Excellence: A demonstrated pursuit of personal growth, integrity, achievement, and meaningful contributions to their community.
Resilience: The courage, determination, and adaptability to confront adversity, overcome challenges, and continue moving forward.
Transformational Leadership: Creativity, initiative, and the ability to bring about positive change.
Founded on the belief that leadership is demonstrated through perseverance and service, the award honors brothers who demonstrate concern for the well-being of others and overcome personal obstacles.
Scholarship recipients are selected annually by a committee composed of alumni and at least one active undergraduate brother. In selecting a recipient, the committee shall consider factors, including but not limited to (a) the overall quality of the application, (b) the applicant’s commitment to brotherhood, mutual respect, and inclusion, (c) the creativity and initiative shown in bringing about positive change, and (d) the documentation establishing financial need. The committee may interview candidates to facilitate its decisions.
