A. Reagan Basile ’27: James S. Campbell Scholarship
The James S. Campbell Scholarship was created in 2003 in honor of James S. Campbell, Ι’48. This scholarship is awarded primarily on academic performance, leadership within Chi Psi, and enrollment within a business program at the applicant’s academic institution.
Reagan Basile is an exceptional student, pursuing a BS in business administration with a minor in data science as a member of Honors Carolina. His consistent dean’s list distinction places him among the top of his class, and he has also participated in programs at the London School of Economics and the Florence University of the Arts. Reagan has already demonstrated meaningful contributions as a portfolio management intern at Logan Capital Management, as an intern at Allan Myers Inc., and as an investment management summer analyst at Vanguard. As the founder of Bummy Balls, he built a charitable business from the ground up, generating over $22,000 in sales and donating proceeds to expand access to golf for underprivileged youth. Within the UNC community, Reagan has distinguished himself as a leader and collaborator. As short-equities sector head of the Carolina Hedge Fund, he conducts sophisticated equity research and leads rigorous discussions defending his investment theses. His service as a volunteer firefighter with the New Hope Fire Department reveals another dimension of his character. He has also already been recognized with the Chi Psi C. Ray Flynn Scholarship and the James H. Troy UNC Business Merit Scholarship. Within Alpha Sigma, Reagan has served as rush chair, #2, #5, and pledge trainer.
Braden Beyer ’28: Harold G. Lundberg Scholarship
The Harold G. “Bones” Lundberg Fund for Education was created in 2000 through a gift from Mr. and Mrs. Henry E. Bartels, P’45, Ψ’48, in memory of Harold G. “Bones” Lundberg, P’24. Scholarships are provided on the basis of academic achievement, campus and community involvement, and commitment to serving the community in which the university or college is located. Brothers with experience assisting underprivileged children are especially encouraged to apply.
Braden Beyer has distinguished himself as one of the top students in his class while pursuing a BS in business administration with a minor in history with consistent placement on the DEAN’S LIST and his impressive performance in the highly competitive Kenan Flagler Undergraduate Alpha Competition, where he earned third place in the private-capital bracket. Braden’s professional experiences further highlight his initiative and work ethic. He has served as an investment-banking summer analyst at Piper Sandler, staff member with Triangle Refreshments and i9 Sports, and employee at North Ridge Country Club. In the community and on campus, he has shown a deep commitment to service and community engagement. As president of the STAR Club, he led initiatives supporting refugee families, organizing donation drives and increasing contributions through effective outreach and collaboration. His continued involvement in organizations, such as Business Cares, further underscores his dedication to making a positive impact. As a member of UNC club baseball, he has successfully managed the demands of collegiate athletics alongside his rigorous academic schedule. Within The Lodge, he has served as recruitment chair, and he will soon be contributing in Brother Bonding.
Joss Gowar ’28: George W. Ray Scholarship
The George W. Ray Scholarship was created in 1996 by Mrs. Margaret N. Ray in memory of her husband George W. Ray, Α’30, Ρ’31. The scholarship is awarded primarily on academic performance, personal integrity, leadership in Chi Psi, and loyalty to the fraternity.
Joss Gowar has an outstanding academic record while pursuing studies in economics and history, along with a business administration minor. A Morehead-Cain Scholar, he has earned consistent placement on the dean’s list and is a member of Honors Carolina. Joss has served as head of client care at EnterJet, has done research benchmarking UNC academic programs, has produced a comprehensive disaster resilience report for the Town of Black Mountain, has co-founded the Shropshire Refugee Homework Club, and has served as lead US ambassador for Kit4Kenya. Under his leadership as #1, the Alpha grew last spring to 104 active members and stands as one of the university’s leading Greek organizations in academic performance by GPA ranking. Whether chairing both social and rush efforts or co-leading the Alpha’s most significant philanthropic event in recent years, he has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to the betterment of the Alpha and the experience of its members.
Cole Hilbourn ’27: David G. Stern Scholarship
The David G. Stern Scholarship was created through an anonymous gift in 2016 to honor the memory of David G. Stern, E’00, who died in 2012. Br. Stern eschewed the dictates of selfishness and exemplified a cherished bond of union. This scholarship is awarded based on academic performance, need, and devotion to refined friendship.
Cole Hilbourn is pursuing a BS in biology with minors in neuroscience and chemistry, along with a business health and marketing certificate. In the Department of Pediatrics (Division of Hematology and Oncology) at UNC School of Medicine, he has engaged in qualitative research training and contributed to a literature synthesis examining how religion influences family engagement and decision-making in pediatric cancer care. He has also presented findings in a collaborative UNC–Barretos Cancer Hospital meeting. In addition, his work in organic chemistry research has included the synthesis of pyrylium dyes as photoredox catalysts and the analysis of large datasets to understand how structural variation impacts catalytic reducing power. In the community, he has organized campus engagement initiatives at Summit College, including international service work in Thailand and Kenya. He also serves as a community relations subchair for Carolina for Kids, is a member of Phi Delta Epsilon (medical fraternity), and has shadowed physicians in pediatrics, emergency medicine, surgery, cardiology, orthopedics, and vascular surgery. On addition, he co-founded Game to Give, a community effort focused on ethical deer population management and food insecurity. In the Lodge, Cole has served as assistant social chair in his freshman spring, then advancing to head social chair during his sophomore year, and currently serves as risk manager. Cole also founded a fraternity-wide parents’ weekend cookout.
JT Tygart ’26: Tom Brown Memorial Scholarship
After receiving a bequest from the estate of Thomas H. Brown, E’66, The Chi Psi Educational Trust established the Tom Brown Memorial Scholarship in 2012. The Tom Brown Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate brother who exhibits a strong entrepreneurial spirit and achievement. Any undergraduate applying for the Brown Scholarship must also provide a Brown Scholarship Addendum, which outlines an entrepreneurial spirit, a desired business endeavor, or what the Brown Scholarship could potentially support financially.
JT Tygart is pursuing a BA in history with a minor in entrepreneurship with participation in the Shuford Program in Entrepreneurship and the Honors London entrepreneurship track. He has been active in Mascot Management, a consulting and operational support service designed to streamline the administrative burdens associated with collegiate mascot programs—he served as Ramses, UNC’s mascot! Professionally, he has served as an intern at Bank of America Private Bank and Mission 3A Venture Capital. Within The Lodge, JT progressed from pledge class president (fall 2022) to rush chair and social chair (spring 2023 to fall 2024) and ultimately to #1 (fall 2024 to fall 2025). He implemented
improvements such as the Active Brother Fund to enhance long-term financial sustainability, he assisted with new traditions like the alumni banquet, and he motivated undergraduates to be more involved with initiation while working with alumni to improve initiation. JT also initiated a routine weekly check-in with the alumni board chairs and revived the Alpha’s newsletter to alumni with two editions per year.
Blake Wandersee ’26: Douglas M. Young DDS Fellowship
In 2005 Doug Young, Σ’55, and his wife, Ursula, created the Douglas M. Young, DDS Fellowship within The Chi Psi Educational Trust. Br. Young had recently retired from a successful dentistry practice in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and was instrumental to the founding of Alpha Upsilon Delta at Wake Forest University. The Young Fellowship is awarded to a Chi Psi who is enrolled in a dental, medical, or veterinary graduate program.
Blake Wandersee is a 2025 graduate of the University of North Carolina with a degree in biology and will continue his education at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry this fall. He spent a gap year on staff with Summit Church’s College Ministry, mentoring students and helping organize large-scale outreach events that engaged hundreds of college students. His commitment to serving others is evident through extensive international and local mission work. Blake served in Bulgaria, Poland, Florida, and North Carolina through various ministry and community service initiatives, working with children, families, local churches, and underserved populations. In preparation for dental school, he volunteered with UNC Adams School of Dentistry and its periodontics clinic and participated in a dental mission trip to Jamaica, working alongside dental students and practicing dentists to provide free dental care to underserved communities. His service also includes working as a direct-support professional for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Within Chi Psi, he served as the Alphas’s Delta Advocate, leading educational programs for new members focused on sexual-assault prevention, bystander intervention, and creating a safer campus community.
Hugh Wheeler ’27: David R. Dunlop Scholarship
The David R. Dunlop Scholarship was created in 2013 through a gift from brother and Mrs. Henry E. Bartels, P’45, Ψ’48, to honor Dave Dunlop, Ψ’59, a stalwart fraternity volunteer and the dean of America’s university advancement officers.
Hugh Wheeler is pursuing a BA in history while completing minors in philosophy, politics, economics, and environmental science and studies. His inclusion on the dean’s list and serving as articles editor for the UNC Undergraduate Law Journal, along with honors such as the Teach for America Fellowship and an Alpha Sigma Foundation Summer Enrichment Scholarship, speak to both his academic discipline and intellectual ambition. He has also participated in study abroad experiences in Madrid and at the London School of Economics. Professionally he has served as an intern at the law offices of James Scott Farrin and worked as a Guardian ad Litem advocate. On campus and in the community, he has worked with Durham Academy Summer Camp, UNC Community Garden, Teach for America Ignite Fellowship, and Special Olympics, as well as played UNC club basketball. Within The Lodge, Hugh has served as #5 and assistant rush chair during his freshman spring and sophomore fall. Beyond formal leadership roles, Hugh has also been an active participant in fraternity athletics, including both intramural basketball and the Greek basketball association team.
