This May, I utilized the Summer Enrichment Scholarship to undertake a 500-mile solo cycling journey along the historic Camino Francés, traveling from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in southern France to Santiago de Compostela in western Spain. Completed over 10 days, this traditional pilgrimage ride served as a fundraiser in partnership with The Charlie Landers Foundation to support research into Ewing Sarcoma, a rare childhood bone cancer. I was motivated to take on this challenge for my childhood best friend Zack, who successfully battled the disease over the last two years. By staying in pilgrim hostels (albergues) along the route, I was able to immerse myself in the rich, diverse regional cultures of northern Spain throughout the 10-day ride. Ultimately, the journey was an awesome personal growth experience that allowed me to challenge myself while supporting an amazing cause.
