Brothers Remembered, Brothers Honored Award
The Alpha Sigma Brothers Remembered, Brothers Honored Award recognizes a graduating or recently graduated member of Alpha Sigma of Chi Psi who has displayed excellence in academic accomplishments and has contributed citizenship, leadership, and service to the Alpha, the university, and the community. The recognition includes a scholarship provided by the Alpha Sigma Foundation in the amount of $7,500 per year to the recipient for post-undergraduate education, for a period of up to two years.
Initially endowed by members of the graduating classes of 1965–1970, the award memorializes deceased brothers of all classes. Many of these brothers deserve commemoration for their excellence in the forms that the award honors in the recipient, but the award is in memory of every one of the deceased. Alpha Sigma brothers have distinguished themselves during their years at the university as student body presidents, editors of the Daily Tar Heel, Phi Beta Kappas, Morehead Scholars, members of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and members of the Order of the Grail. After graduation, their achievements have included Rhodes Scholarships, Fulbright Scholarships, US Supreme Court clerkships, and leadership in numerous professions.
Award recipients are selected annually by a committee designated by the Foundation. In selecting a recipient, the committee shall consider factors, including but not limited to (a) the overall quality of the application, (b) the academic, business, or professional experience provided by the graduate program, (c) the civic or public service aspects of the graduate program, (d) the financial assistance required by the applicant to participate in the graduate program, and (e) the applicant’s contributions to the Alpha, the university, and the community. The committee may interview applicants to facilitate its decisions.
Award applications are solicited and accepted toward the end of the spring semester each year. The 2024 application deadline is Friday, April 26, 2024.
